I do a great deal of writing and content editing for the non-profit organization, Healthy Growing Churches (HGC). This time last year I traveled with HGC to Exponential in Orlando, FL. This conference became a huge turning point for me in various ways.

Here is an excerpt from my journal as I wrote about my experience at Exponential:

“I thought there was something wrong with me regarding what I believe about church, discipleship, empowerment, equipping, and multiplication. What I came away knowing is I am not the freak! I am not alone!”

-Beth’s Journal

Here are a few articles on church & culture that I’ve been able to write over the last several weeks. I hope you feel motivated and encouraged to be a part of the change!

Captivating Culture

“Culture matters. It matters in our families, our workplaces, our teams, and our churches. The culture of your church has the power to kill vision or bring a vision to life. When the culture of your church is captivating not only to the people but also to the heart of God, you get to see Him move in powerful ways, many times, in ways you never dreamed or imagined…”

Culture: Counting the Cost–Part 1

I’ve been in church my entire life, and one thing I know to be true is that change happens very slowly. I was on staff at a church where we rarely, if ever, talked about discipleship (although “making disciples” was in our tagline). After about eight years into my eleven years at that church, a dialogue started, and I remember being so full of hope. Perhaps, my church would become about something more than the Sunday gathering. I craved those deeper relationships found only in discipleship-style relationships.

While there is something to be said about moving culture slowly, at some point, there will be a shift, and not everyone is going to like it. Here are a few things you could lose in the process…

Culture: Counting the Cost–Part 2

But there is so much at stake in getting culture right, and last week we discussed the possible costs of changing your church culture. While it is essential to understand that changing culture in your church can be a slow process, focus on one small change after another. Those small changes will come together cumulatively to create a significant impact. And that is what we’re talking about here, and it is what we’ll be talking about at the HGC PreConference at Exponential in Orlando in March.

Today, I want to open up the discussion about the cost of NOT establishing a change in your church culture…

What’s the Point?

For decades now, many church leaders have been fine with the status quo. But that is so far from what our Father wants from us. He has always desired for His Church to be a thriving, growing, changing, evolving, living thing. The fact is that if we want to reach people growing up in my generation and the generations to come, what worked 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago is not going to work as effectively as what we can move towards now by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit doesn’t think and move within the confines of our human limitations. Instead, He gives us dreams and visions to do things that seem radical at times. We are called to think out of the box! He has empowered us to do so! So stop thinking your idea is ridiculous, and begin to move towards action. We are the light of the world. Shine brightly, my friends.
